Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (リオ2016オリンピックでのマリオ＆ソニックRio 2016 orinpikku de no Mario & sonikku) is the fifth installment in the Mario & Sonic series. It was released for Nintendo 3DS in March/April 2016 and was released for Wii U in June 2016. It is placed during the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
Functionality[]
amiibo are compatible in both versions of the game. In the Nintendo 3DS version, using any of the Mario figures will turn the Mario costume into the Gold Mario costume. Using the Sonic figure will turn the Sonic costume into the Super Sonic costume. These costumes, when used in your Mii character, improve their stats.
In the Wii U version, compatible amiibo unlock a League for your Mii to enter. After winning 25 tournaments in the game, the player can use either a Mario franchise or the Sonic figure to enter in the Mario League or the Sonic League respectively. When you enter a League, you face the characters of that League in various events in the same way as in other tournaments in the game. The reward for finishing a League is a Mario or Sonic Mii costume.

The game is only compatible with amiibo of the following characters. Any variant or color of these amiibo are supported.
In the Wii U version, scanning any other amiibo will give the player 5 coins and 5 rings.
